Sharla Rivera (Director)
Sharla has taught at Georgetown since 2016, and in Fall 2017 she started working with the School of Continuing Studies to design and develop the SCS Writing Lab. Before starting at Georgetown, she taught at a variety of schools in the DC area, where she worked with both native and non-native speaking students with their writing. She had also worked in writing labs/centers at two different universities before Georgetown SCS. She received her MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from American University.
At the SCS Writing Lab, Sharla designs and runs workshops, meets with students for consultations, and runs all the behind-the-scenes workings of the Lab.
Kathleen Kearney (Writing Consultant)
Kathleen F. Kearney has been teaching and consulting with students at Georgetown since 2018. She has a TEFL Certificate from Georgetown University and an M.S. in literacy, culture and language education from Indiana University. She has taught university writing for American University, Kaplan International English and the State Department. She has also taught young English learners at the National Defense University, two DC public charter schools and DCPS. Since 2009, she has volunteered as a teacher, language lab instructor, librarian and online tutor at the Washington English Center.
Michelle Marrero (Writing Consultant)
Michelle I. Marrero is an Adjunct Lecturer in the English Language & Teaching Training Department (Evening & Weekend English Programs), and has taught a number of other courses in the English Language Program as well. She is passionate about advocating for equal educational opportunities for English Language Learners, especially students with limited or no formal education (SLIFE). She believes in the power of mentoring as a means to empower ELs to be productive global citizens.
Marrero holds a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University. She was the recipient of the 2018-2019 Dr. Charles L. Faires Dissertation of Distinction Award for her dissertation titled, A Case Study: Meeting the Needs of English Learners with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education. Currently, she is a Dissertation Alumni Mentor for the Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Marrero also holds a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from the Metropolitan University and a Bachelor of Arts from the Interamerican University in Puerto Rico. She is a National Board certified teacher and was the recipient of the 2011 Victoria De Sanchez Northern Virginia Hispanic Teacher of the Year.
